[:en]CDN in ‘JUMLA’[:]

Career Disha Nepal has the objective to provide the services equally in urban as well as rural areas’ youths and increase CDN’s network to run our services in the rural areas of Nepal. Concerning our objectives, CDN team members, Technical Director Inge Patsch and Project Manager Sagar Ghimire travelled to Jumla on the 4th of March till the 14th of March. It was first labor market research in the Mid-Western Region (rural).

 The initial objectives of the field visit were

  • to test the assessment and labour market workshop in a remote region.
  • to test the validity of CDN’s services through the indecision scale.
  • to run a pilot project related the labour market, data collection and testing the format.
  • to create job videos- Whatchado.
  • to identify local partners for career counselling in future.
  • to coordinate district Data Collection via local partners.

The summary of the field report according to the technical director and the project manager is as follows:

During the 10 days field trip, we did personality based assessment for over 70 students including labor market workshops, individual career counseling. We also included the indecision scale before and after the assessment to assess students’ level of confusion. It was a general observation that the students were quite open to answering questions and took comparatively longer time to fill the assessment. However, due to the short time-frame we could not reach as many students as we would have liked.

In order to run the pilot phase for collecting labor market data, we gathered detailed information about jobs through interviews and discussion with different experts involves in different job sectors. We covered 6 job sectors that were basic to Jumla; Agriculture, Health, Building & Construction, Engineering, Media and Social Work.

We have taken Whatchado video of Keshab - a Social Worker,  Kalika - a Health Assistant, Peru - Disabled Worker Social Mobilizer, Sushil Devkota- Social Worker and the founder of RACE.

We discussed the viability of career counseling in Jumla with active social workers, Sushil Devkota and , Jibraj Shahi. Following their enthusiasm, we provided them with basic training about different phases that could be included in basic career counseling. Phase 1- Taking indecision scale, doing workshop and filling assessment; Phase 2- Uploading and processing the data; Phase 3- Giving feedback to the students and taking indecision scale again.

Field Report Jumla Research

Knowing the ground reality of the labour market is essential to provide quality career guidance for us. For that sake we have conducted a pilot field research in Jumla which had two aim:

Firstly, to gather more data about the potential of Jumla’s labour market now and in future. Secondly we wanted to test our core service: the interest based psychometric assessment in the setting of Jumla and assess the feasibility to work with local partner organizations.

For that Purpose Inge Patsch and Sagar Ghimire have been traveling from 5.3.2017 till 13.3.2017 to Jumla. Sushil Devkota from RACE Nepal was our local contact point and helped us arrange various meetings as well as the workshops in the schools. We furthermore could use their local office as a workplace.

The format for assessing the labour market seems to work well. Further similar research should be conducted in other districts of Nepal got get a more refined picture of the labour market. In most interviews with government officials, they first would start to tell us the number of governmental employees. While training enumerators we should emphasize therefor that they dedicatedly ask their interview partner for employment in public and private sector.

In terms of data collection we could conclude, that the current format serves well to assess the demand in the labour market for most sectors. For further interviews we can note that especially for interviewing governmental officials it is useful to bring an official letter (partnership with ILO?) to access them as some of them were hesitant sharing their insights with them (we did NOT ask them any personalized data though).

Also this requires sufficient time in the field as it might take several days to get the appointment with the right person. It is important to report those officials who have been working in the district for a longer period, as most information were drawn from their memory rather than official documets.

The watchadoo videos were rather easy to produce as long as one does not strive for perfect video or audio. While the footage made outside was having an nice picture, it was a challenge to get the clear sound (even though we used an audio-device directly next to the person to record it. The inside video has the challenge of the worse lightening. People were spontaneously able to give the interview and we did all of them in a one shot. For some we repeated single questions in a second shot.

Conducting Labour Market Workshop in Bhoragau

The logistic of doing the workshops and taking the assessment in such remote areas is a challenge but doable. It requires sufficient time for processing. Assessments and Job & Edu Booklets are best prepared beforehand so to not have to rely on the online job & edu DB in the field.

A bigger challenge would be to find and to keep connected with local partners. We left the field without any specific agreements on any further cooperation. CDN would need to develop a clear concept on how local partners can overcome technical hurdles to use our system as well as how to train and prepare them. Last but not least we need to find organizations which dedicately are involved in career counselling and youth guidance and figure out which other tools they would need that the online assessment becomes a feasible instrument for their works. The development of a business case which works for CDN as well as for the local partners seems one important big next step.

On the 21st of March 2017, Career Disha Nepal (CDN) and Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST) unit of Tribhuwan University signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which will see the pioneers of modern educational institute and the innovators of career counseling in Nepal work hand-in-hand to create a society where information is free and focused.

Professor Rameshwar Adhikari, the director of RECAST, officially inaugurated the program by illuminating us with the sheer importance of research in Nepal. He further highlighted how research can contribute to Nepal’s sustainable development.

It was a great honour for Career Disha Nepal to have the opening words from the Dean of Science and Technology- Prof. Ram Prasad Khatiwada, PhD. In his encouraging speech, he casted light on the misunderstood educational system of Nepal, in both academic as well as vocational sector. He further emphasized how the lack of educational information and knowledge about choices are leading the current youth to easily ‘detour’ in their pursuit of career and meaningful life. Even though he holds a prestigious place in the academic foreground, he reiterated that youth were being forced in the academic stream regardless of their passion or will.

Hari Krishna Dahal , the senior career counsellor of CDN, gave a presentation about the vision and the mission that drives CDN. He detailed the team with the different tools and the technology involved in those tools.

Inge Patsch, the technical director of CDN, briefed the present members there about the impact CDN and RECAST together can create, and should create. She illustrated thoroughly how RECAST and CDN working together can work effectively and add value to each other’s expertise.

The final event closed with the MoU signing between the founding member and the CEO Saroj Bastola signing for CDN and the director of RECAST Professor Rameshwar Adhikari for RECAST.

We are hearing about online education frequently. This time we are going to give detail information about this education. Most of us think that there is a certain age for studying and then holding this one career. To learn something online opens the range of topics and for sure time to learn. It is the platform for autodidact and self-organized people. Whereas, social activist Miss Radha Poudel is the best example. Social worker, author, and activist Miss. RadhaPoudel very actively involved in the work of CDN. She was award winner of Madan Puraskar 2014, Nepal's 75 Women Leaders 2016, Social Work Award 2013. She completed her Master in Development Management at Asian Institute of Management (MDM), Master in Arts (MA), Master in Education (M.ed) and Bachelor in Nursing (BN) in regular basis college. As she is now studying different online courses we are going to share her experience about online education.

What is Online Education?

Online education is the fastest growing way of learning by using technology, where students and instructor interact via internet application, telephone and computer without leaving their own residence. There are free and paid online education, some of them are run by the affiliated university and provides grades and certificates. Radha Poudel has done several online courses to enhance her knowledge and skills related to her career. She is satisfied with its convenient fees, time and choice of given subjects. She recommends others to try the open space with a variety of choices to develop one's skills and capacity.

How are online courses different from in-class courses?

Both online and in-class university and college have the same goal to provide students a quality education.  The key different between online and in-class courses is the internet-based learning process, that means all exams, lectures and much of reading in online classes are done on the web. Similarly, instructors and students are not in the same place. Online classes provide more flexibility than do in class courses for purpose of giving more convenience for the learner.

How could Nepalese people benefit from online education?

While studying abroad is increasing in Nepal, the biggest advantage of online education is to find the desired subject online which is unavailable here. Online education minimizes the gap to receive the quality education for everyone – no matter where they live. One can enroll online education from different background and environments. So, it is a big platform for all students, teachers and not forgetting people with different abilities. Nowadays, more colleges and universities are offering online education in a variety of courses and user-friendly designed. The flexible schedule and one can do any interesting courses, in their favorite time, place and posture, are big benefits. Online education also develops technical skills by using different internet applications to accomplished given assignments.

According to social activist RadhaPoudel: “Sometimes, internet connectivity and languages could be the challenge for Nepalese people. We could benefit from its providing features, convenient time, a variety of option, and affordable fees.”

What could be requirements for online courses?

Most of the requirements of online education are similar to regular University or College. First and for most requirements of online learning, is internet access. Most of the online courses are designed user-friendly but one most need the basic computer skills. [:en]The New Grading System in Nepal[:ne]ग्रेडीङ प्रणालीका सकारात्मक प्रभाव [:]

[:en]After the implementation of the grading system, there were a lot of conversations that sided with either of the two systems i.e. those who opposed and those who didn’t. While the expert on the field side with the change. According to the related implementation organization, this change will ensure more educational participation. In the year 2073, from 5.88 lakhs students, 1.85 lakhs students received in two subjects grade D and E. 80% of those were able to continue their academics in grade 11, and the rest got the chance to better their grade(which was not a possibility in earlier years). Last year,  around 3.69 lakhs got admitted in grade 11 whereas this year the number increased to 5.5 lakhs. While at the same time, in the technical area, over 50,000 students got admission. It was brought to notice that the increasing number of student enrollment has not caused any issue in the process. This grading system also saw the rise in the number of Sanskrit students receiving enrollment in grade 11 which was depleting in the older system. २०७२ सालको एसएलसी परीक्षाको ग्रेड प्रणालीको बारेमा धेरैले सकारात्मक र नकारात्मक टिका टिप्पणी गरेका थिए | अक्षराङ्कन पद्दतिको कार्यान्वयन समितिको सुझाव प्रतिवेदनको अवस्था अध्ययन अनुसार एसएलसी अक्षराङ्कन पद्दति लागु भएपछि अघिल्लो वर्षहरुको तुलनामा धेरै विद्यार्थीहरुले अध्ययनको अवसर प्राप्त गरेका उल्लेख गरेको छ |

एसएलसी परीक्षा २०७२ मा ५ लाख ८८ हजार १ सय ५२ परीक्षार्थी सामेल भएका मध्ये २ विषयमा डी र ई ग्रेड प्राप्त गरेका १ लाख ८५ हजार ५ सय ६४ जनाले ग्रेड वृद्धिको अवसर प्राप्त गरे भने यी मध्ये करिव ८० प्रतिशतले कक्षा ११ मा विभिन्न विषय समुहमा भर्ना भै अध्ययन गर्ने अवसर प्राप्त गरेका छन | गत वर्ष ३ लाख ६९ हजार ४ सय २६ जना विद्यार्थीहरु कक्षा ११ मा भर्ना भएका थिए भने यस वर्ष ५ लाख ५० हजार कक्षामा भर्ना हुन योग्य रहेको देखियो | यसरी गत वर्षको तुलनामा यो संख्या करिव ३३ प्रतिशतले बढी देखिन्छ | प्राविधिक तथा व्यावसायिक तालिम परिषद अन्तर्गत करिव ५० हजारले अध्ययनको अवसर प्राप्त गरेको पाईयो |

त्यस्तै गरी +२ ग्रेडीङका सम्बन्धमा राष्ट्रिय परीक्षा बोर्डका पदाधिकारी र विभिन्न क्याम्पस प्रशासन, प्रधानाध्यापक र शिक्षकहरु संगको अन्तरक्रियामा खासै कुनैपनि किसिमको समस्या र दुविधा नभएको कुरा अवगत गराउनु भयो | श्री संस्कृत माध्यमिक विद्यालय, मत्छारी रौतहटका प्रधानाध्यापक श्री प्रवाशकुमार ठाकुरले संस्कृत विषय लिई एसएलसी पुरा गरेका विद्यार्थीहरुको भर्ना अवसर अरु विषयको तुलनामा कम रहेकाले आगामी दिनमा फराकिलो बनाउन सके उचित हुने कुरा व्यक्त गर्नु भयो भने कतिपय विद्यालयहरुले भर्नाको आधार बारे समयमै सूसुचित हुन नसकेकाले आगामी दिनमा समयमै अभिमुखिकरणको आवश्यकता औल्याए |

The Secondary Education Exam (SEE) has commenced for the first time in Nepal. Unlike in the past, as the final examination of Class 10, the Secondary Leaving Certificate Examination (SLC) has been replaced as Secondary Education Exam (SEE) and the well-known +2 is now renamed School Leaving Certificate (SLC).

As per the Revised Education Policy, Secondary Level is regarded up to class 12 and Class 10 examination is named as Secondary Education Exam (SEE). SEE has started applying the similar SLC forms and formats from today. This year, there is the total of 5 Lakhs 38 thousand SEE examinees including the regular, partial and exempted students. Likewise, 3 thousand 7 hundred and 3 were technical candidates.

The board has notified that the system has adequate numbers of personnel to effectively conduct the SEE examination. “There are 18 supervision teams under the leadership of Assistant Secretary of Education Ministry for the supervision of the examination”: Examination Controller Ambika Prasad Regmi.

संशोधित शिक्षा ऐनअनुसार कक्षा १२ सम्म माध्यमिक तहकायम भएपछि कक्षा १० को परीक्षालाई माध्यमिक शिक्षा परीक्षा (सेकेण्डरी एजुकेसन एक्जाम) (एसईई) नामकरण गरिएको छ | तर पुरानै एसएलसीको शैली, नियमावली, निर्देशिकाको आधारमा परीक्षा शुरु भएको हो | शिक्षा ऐनमा राष्ट्रिय परीक्षा बोर्डले क्षेत्रीयस्तरमा परीक्षा गर्ने उल्लेख भए पनि बोर्डका क्षेत्रीयस्तरका स्थायी संरचना नबनेका कारण केन्द्रीयस्तरमै परीक्षा सञ्चालन हुन लागेको हो । पहिलेको उच्च माध्यमिक शिक्षा परिषद्का जिल्लास्थित कार्यालयलाई परीक्षा बोर्डका रूपमा स्थापित गरे पनि पूरै संरचना भने तयार नभएको अवस्थामा एसएलसीका नामबाट सञ्चालन हुने कक्षा १० को अन्तिम परीक्षा राष्ट्रिय परीक्षा बोर्डले दिएको अधिकार प्रयोग गरी साबिकको परीक्षा नियन्त्रण कार्यालयले गर्न लागेको हो ।

एईई परीक्षा मर्यादिद, भयरहित, शान्तिपूर्ण रुपमा सम्पन्नको निम्ति देशभरि १ हजार ९ सय २३ परीक्षा केन्द्र त्यति नै संख्यामा केन्द्राध्यक्ष, २ हजार ६ सय ४६ सहायक केन्द्राध्यक्ष, २२ हजार ४ सय ६१ निरीक्षक, सहयोगी र सुरक्षाकर्मीसहित ६७ हजार ५ सय ९१ जनशक्ति परीक्षामा खटाइएको साथसाथै परीक्षा अनुगमनका निम्ति शिक्षा मन्त्रालयले सहसचिवको नेतृत्वमा १८ वटा अनुगमन टोली जसमा क्षेत्रीय शिक्षा निर्देशनालय र जिल्लामा माध्यमिक शिक्षा परीक्षा समन्वय समितिको अनुगमन टोली रहने परीक्षा नियन्त्रक अम्बिकाप्रसाद रेग्मीले जानकारी दिए । (स्रोत: एजेन्सी)

A lot of work has been done over the past few decades about how people learn. Learning is a life-long process. You always learn for yourself, not for anybody else. That’s why we believe that it is good to find out, what is your suitable way of learning with a maximum output of success.

Principles of learning

You should always keep in mind, that you can learn anything if you have a goal that requires it. Like this you are more connected to the learning subject. So find a personal reason why you want to learn this material and then try to visualise, hear, or feel some situation that will result from having learned the material. Expectations are self-fulfilling prophecies - what you expect is what you get. It is also useful to have a calm mind because learning seems to work much better if you’re generally relaxed.

Learning how to learn is the core skill

It was probably never explicitly mentioned in all the years that you've spent in school, that it makes a difference how you personally learn new subjects easily. First of all you should have an organised place to work so that you're not disturbed by others. It is always good to browse through the material and looking up for headings, pictures or tables. Then, you can break the material into small chunks and start anywhere. Anyone can learn faster by structuring the information. So take your time to organize yourself. Ask yourself questions before or after looking at each chunk and use mind maps to make it clear. Tick off each section as you read it, or when you understand it and highlight new information. Summarize the material out loud. Walk around while reading or listening. Put key ideas on post-it notes and arrange them in different meaningful patterns on your desk, board, or wall. Summarize the content in your own words. Use the buddy system and ask each other questions about what you've learned. The most important is to make breaks to give your brain a peaceful “cooling down” time while eating something or go for a walk.

We recommend you to try lots of different learning methods to find for yourself the most suitable version of studying. Try out different styles and look what you can keep in mind. And never forget, learning more means earning more. So those who learn more, and do it continually over their lifetimes, do much better in whatever career they have chosen.
