Career Disha Nepal conducted Online Assessment to SEE (Secondary Education Examination) students in Kings College in collaboration with Glocal Nepal.

The program was Organized by Glocal Nepal named 'Glocal After School', where the program coordinator was Maulik Shakya. 22 students attended that program who came from different schools across Kathmandu valley. Since they all are waiting for their SEE  result, few students notified us that they were involved in bridge courses for their higher education.

The students were initially unaware of their expectations, as not much information was provided to them about career counseling. However, they caught up quite well, asking questions regarding the assessment system of Career Disha Nepal and making sure that their questions were heard. They were critical about the assessment and were careful about their choices during the assessment. Few of the students took longer than others as one student implied she had never thought of those specific questions and would need more time to reflect. Without a shadow of doubt, it was a good sign for us.

Students who got the results instantaneously could reflect upon their personality and question their choices. Some students who were so certain that they wanted to take IT as their career reflected - they might afterall reconsider their stance according to their personality.

All in all, it was a successful visit to introduce career counseling to the youth who recently completed nation’s first SEE examination.

Nursing is a profession within the health care sector focused on the care of individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health. डिप्लोमा तह: यो तह नर्सिङसंग सम्बन्धित व्यावहारिक र सैद्धान्तिक ज्ञानको समिश्रण हो | यसमा विद्यार्थीहरुलाई पेशागत रुपमा नर्सिङ पेशालाई आत्मसात गर्दै पेशासंग सम्बन्धित सम्पूर्ण ज्ञानहरु प्रदान गरिन्छ | यो तह पछी विद्यार्थीहरुले सोझै रोजगार बजारमा प्रवेश गर्न पाउछन् | यो तहको अध्ययनको लागि कम्तिमा एस. एल. सी मा सि ग्रेड गणित, अंग्रेजी र विज्ञान विषयमा हुनुपर्दछ |

The official language of Nepal is Nepali. According to the National Census of 2011, there are 123 different Nepalese languages spoken as mother tongues (first language) in Nepal. Lots of people, whose mother tongue is different from their country’s official language, find it as a barrier to learn the official language in school. And then there is a whole different challenge, speaking English. Most of the schools are teaching more subjects in English than improving the skills and knowledge of the official language Nepali itself. We would like to take up this issue as an essential basis to talk about the gap between focusing on the international language English than investing in learning a higher level in the mother tongue or the official language.

Advantages of being educated in the official language

Children who are taught only in one’s mother tongue can miss big opportunities for their future. People who cannot speak a country’s dominant language often have restricted opportunities for employment and social mobility. Literature, Movies, Media – the access to information and entertainment is limited. It has also been shown that skills and concepts taught in the learners’ mother tongue do not have to be re-taught when they transfer to a second language. Studies have shown that a learner who knows how to read and write in one language will develop reading and writing skills in a new language faster. Education systems should perform both possibilities where the official language as a subject as well as education in one’s home language are both given equal importance. That’s a question of respect for ethnic minority language and culture. But they must also ensure that children from disadvantaged minority backgrounds learn the official language to find a good place in society and get decent jobs. Furthermore, parents who do not speak the language their children are being taught in school may be less able to engage with teachers, education authorities and to help with their children’s educational needs. And then there is the question of learning English. It is definitely harder to learn a third language when you are not fully familiar with your mother tongue and the official language of your country. It’s proven, that learners automatically transfer knowledge acquired in one language to another language as soon as they have learned sufficient vocabulary in the new language. To put it plainly- be good in Nepali, then it’s easier to learn English.

To sum up, we would like to underline the message that it is absolutely important to speak first of all your mother tongue and then Nepali in an above average level. It will help you to be able to communicate with everyone in your country and to deal with government operations or/and even with the local shops around the corner. It is an investment for your cultural heritage than just focusing on learning English, which is undoubtedly a big advantage.

त्यसकारण, अन्य भाषा सिक्नु पुर्व आफ्नो मातृ र राष्ट्रिय भाषामा दक्ष हुनु महत्वपूर्ण हुन्छ |  जसले गर्दा नेपालको सरकारी कार्यलय देखि हरेक व्यक्तिहरुसंग कुराकानी गर्न सजिलो हुन्छ | अँग्रेजी भाषा मात्र सिक्नुमा केन्द्रित हुनुभन्दा पनि भाषा सास्कृतिको सम्रक्षणमा केन्द्रित हुनु पछिको लागि बढी लाभदायिक हुन्छ |

Career Disha Nepal officially handed over the 49 Psychometric Assessment results to Ishwor Chaulagain, the principal of Phatakshila Higher Secondary School, Sindhupalchowk. The personal assessment results recommend every individual with a list of possible career option with detail information of what education they should choose, how fitting are they with each job according to their personality and professional orientation.

To describe detail information of individual result to the students, CDN’s career counselor Hari Krishna Dahal had given the Result Interpreter Training to the principal and provided counseling materials, CDN Education Flex and CDN Green Booklet.

Mr. Chaulagain added “This Career counseling approach for guiding students to choose the suitable career according to their interest, strength, and values can be very effective and applicable. I will use this approach to future students as well.”

Career Disha Nepal conducted customize package including Online Assessment, Career Crash Course Workshop, Life Coaching Workshop, Competence Workshops, Career Internship or Field Visit, Education Pathway Workshop and Peer Counseling Session to SEE (Secondary Education Examination) appeared students at Forum for the Welfare of Himalayan Children, Bungmati, Lalitpur.

These seven days interpersonal workshop, included different activities, interview, games, group work, discussion, an assessment aimed to help students to find out their interest, abilities and potential career. Online assessment recommends students’ personality detail and suitable career. One day career crash course help students to find out their interest, strength, and values.  Similarly, Competence Assessment analyses students competency and get recommended suitable job according to their core competencies.

This student-friendly whole workshop scheduled different date and time and assisted by CDN Career Counselor Hari Krishna Dahal and Namaraj KC.

In our counseling sessions, we are often inquired about our recommendations about quality education. This is a big question and is influenced by many different factors. Against the popular belief, the price is not always an indicator of good quality education.

According to UNICEF, “a quality education is defined by five elements: the learner's outside experiences, learning environment, the content of education, learning processes, and education outcomes. Learners must be healthy, well-nourished and supported by their families and communities. The learning environment should be safe, healthy and stimulating. Appropriate education content is relevant to the learner and presented in a well-managed classroom. Learning outcomes should meet promote participation in society." All five factors must be present for learners to receive a quality education. To measure the quality of education, outcomes are examined. Learners' academic achievements should match their age and grade level and meet national standards.

What else is an indicator for a high-quality education?

The teachers are always the key for find out if an education is recommendable. How is the relation between local and international teachers? Do the school offers teachers education? The problem with teachers can sometimes be, that they are paid poorly (and sometimes irregularly) and suffer from low social and professional status. Those reasons can entail less motivation and have a powerful impact on the quality of student learnings. Under these circumstances, teachers are only teaching basic skills like reading and math and don’t encourage the students to think critically and interdisciplinary working. You should also find out about teaching methods. Does the school offer different teaching methods like excursions or workshops or is it just frontal teaching all the time?

We think, the Austrian Nobel Prize Winner, Albert Einstein, summarized the topic about quality education effectively: “Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think”. So if you have the impression that you will get from a course more than just the knowledge of the different topics, choose it.

युनिसेफ (UNICEF)ले विद्यार्थीहरुको वाह्य अनुभव, सिकाइ गर्ने वातावरण, शैक्षिक विषयवस्तु, सिकाइ प्रक्रिया  र शैक्षिक परिणाम, जस्ता पाँचवटा तत्वहरुको आधारमा गुणस्तरीय शिक्षालाई परिभाषित गरेको छ | विद्यार्थीहरु स्वस्थ, राम्रो पालन पोषण भएको, सिकाइको लागि विद्यार्थी स्वयम अग्रसर रहनुको साथै समाज र परिवारले पनि अध्ययन क्रियाकलापमा पूर्ण सहयोग गरेको हुनुपर्दछ | सिकाई क्रियाकलाप  स्वस्थ, सुरक्षित, आधारभूत सुविधा सम्पन्न र सौहार्दपूर्ण वातावरणमा हुनुपर्दछ | शिक्षण विधि विद्यार्थी मैत्री हुनु पर्दछ, शैक्षिक विषयवस्तु विद्यार्थीहरुको उमेर अनुसार सान्दर्भिक, व्यवस्थित कक्षाकोठा र विद्यालय, उपयुक्त शिक्षण विधि र शिक्षकको प्रस्तुतीकरण राम्रो हुनुपर्दछ | सिकाइको परिणामले सामाजिक समस्याहरुको समाधानमा सहभागिता बढाउने र स्वास्थ्य, पोषणको बारेमा आधारभूत ज्ञान प्रदान गर्न सक्नु पर्दछ | विद्यार्थीहरुलाई गुणस्तरीय शिक्षा प्रदान गर्न शैक्षिक सँस्थाहरुले माथिका पाँचवटा तत्वहरुमा ध्यान दिनु पर्दछ | शिक्षाको गुणस्तर मापन गर्नको लागि परिक्षाको परिणाम जाचबुझ गरिन्छ | विद्यार्थीको शैक्षिक उपलब्धि, उनीहरुको उमेर, शैक्षिकस्तर र राष्ट्रिय मापदण्ड अनुसारको हुनु पर्दछ |

उच्च गुणस्तरीय शिक्षा सूचक

विद्यार्थीलाई उपयुक्त हुने खालको शिक्षाको खोजि वा सिफारिस गर्ने प्रमुख व्यक्ति शिक्षकहरुनै हुन् | स्थानीय स्तरको शिक्षकहरु अन्तराष्ट्रिय स्थरको शिक्षकहरुसंग कसरी सम्बन्धित छन् ?... के स्थानीय स्थरको शिक्षकहरुलाई विद्यालयले शिक्षण सम्बन्धि तालिम प्रदान गर्दछ ?... कहिलेकाही शिक्षकहरुलाई निम्न स्थरको तलव, कमजोर सामाजिक र पेशागत सम्मानले पनि गुणस्तरीय शिक्षा प्रदान गर्न यी कारणहरुले प्रभाव पार्दछ | शिक्षकहरुले आफुले पढाउने विषयको मात्र आधारभूत शिक्षा प्रदान गर्ने तर विद्यार्थीहरुलाई रचनात्मक क्षमता विकास तिर प्रोत्साहन गरेको पाइदैन | कक्षाकोठामा प्रयोग गरिने शिक्षण विधिहरुले पनि गुणस्तरीय शिक्षामा प्रभाव पारेको हुन्छ | विद्यालयमा शिक्षण सिकाई विधिहरु मध्ये कुन शिक्षण विधिलाई प्राथमिकता दिन्छन् सो कुरालाई पनि मध्यनजर गरेर रचनात्मक क्षमता वृद्धि गर्ने विद्यालय रोज्नुपर्दछ |

अष्ट्रियाका नोबेल पुरस्कार विजेता अल्बर्ट आइन्स्टाइन ले ‘गुणस्तरीय शिक्षा’को अर्थ यसरी दिएका छन् |  “शिक्षा भनेको विषयवस्तुको तथ्य जान्नु मात्र नभई रचनात्मक क्षमता वृद्धि गराउने तालिम हो |” त्यसैले त्यस्तो खालको कलेज रोज जहाँ सम्बन्धित पाठ्यपुस्तकको ज्ञान हासिल गर्नुमा मात्र सिमित नभई सृजनशीलता पनि वृद्धि गर्न सकियोस |
