Career Disha Nepal conducted career counseling orientation for the SEE (Secondary Education Examination) students from different schools at Edulift, Ramhiti-Phulwari, Kathmandu.

CDN’s senior career counselor, Hari Krishna Dahal, and Namaraj KC ran the one-day interactive orientation session which included several career related activities; group discussion, career focused games, Ice Breakers, and The Mirror Game in order to enlighten the students to choose the deliberate and fitting career. According to the students’ feedback, the orientation session was interactive, refreshing, friendly and above all reflective.

Edulift http://www.eduliftacademy.org/ is a non-profit educational initiative dedicated to transforming and empowering the lives of young people and children from marginalized Himalayan and Tibetan ethnic groups. Edulift is giving Tibetan students to experiential-based education and life-skills session to prepare young people to live a purposeful life.

Field Report Jumla Research

Knowing the ground reality of the labour market is essential to provide quality career guidance for us. For that sake we have conducted a pilot field research in Jumla which had two aim:

Firstly, to gather more data about the potential of Jumla’s labour market now and in future. Secondly we wanted to test our core service: the interest based psychometric assessment in the setting of Jumla and assess the feasibility to work with local partner organizations.

For that Purpose Inge Patsch and Sagar Ghimire have been traveling from 5.3.2017 till 13.3.2017 to Jumla. Sushil Devkota from RACE Nepal was our local contact point and helped us arrange various meetings as well as the workshops in the schools. We furthermore could use their local office as a workplace.

The format for assessing the labour market seems to work well. Further similar research should be conducted in other districts of Nepal got get a more refined picture of the labour market. In most interviews with government officials, they first would start to tell us the number of governmental employees. While training enumerators we should emphasize therefor that they dedicatedly ask their interview partner for employment in public and private sector.

In terms of data collection we could conclude, that the current format serves well to assess the demand in the labour market for most sectors. For further interviews we can note that especially for interviewing governmental officials it is useful to bring an official letter (partnership with ILO?) to access them as some of them were hesitant sharing their insights with them (we did NOT ask them any personalized data though).

Also this requires sufficient time in the field as it might take several days to get the appointment with the right person. It is important to report those officials who have been working in the district for a longer period, as most information were drawn from their memory rather than official documets.

The watchadoo videos were rather easy to produce as long as one does not strive for perfect video or audio. While the footage made outside was having an nice picture, it was a challenge to get the clear sound (even though we used an audio-device directly next to the person to record it. The inside video has the challenge of the worse lightening. People were spontaneously able to give the interview and we did all of them in a one shot. For some we repeated single questions in a second shot.

Conducting Labour Market Workshop in Bhoragau

The logistic of doing the workshops and taking the assessment in such remote areas is a challenge but doable. It requires sufficient time for processing. Assessments and Job & Edu Booklets are best prepared beforehand so to not have to rely on the online job & edu DB in the field.

A bigger challenge would be to find and to keep connected with local partners. We left the field without any specific agreements on any further cooperation. CDN would need to develop a clear concept on how local partners can overcome technical hurdles to use our system as well as how to train and prepare them. Last but not least we need to find organizations which dedicately are involved in career counselling and youth guidance and figure out which other tools they would need that the online assessment becomes a feasible instrument for their works. The development of a business case which works for CDN as well as for the local partners seems one important big next step.

As the Austrian physicist Albert Einstein already said: “The only source of knowledge is experience.” We would like to write our thoughts about working in different fields and companies as interns. In our counseling workshops, we gathered that lots of good educated young Nepalese girls and boys are unemployed and are looking for what to do next in their career. There are so many possibilities on the job market but where to start. Doing some internship could be a good approach to minimize the gap between theory and practice and to give you a good overview if the desired job is right for you.

Am I really made for the job?

Internships give you the chance to see if the 'spotted job' matches your individual personality. We would say that this is the best method to find out about your own capacity and skills that are required in the given field. Profit or non-profit companies offer you this temporary employment for you to find out if you are also suitable for the culture of their organization. Another advantage for your future career is that internships are encouraged by colleges for credit completion and are providing references in your Curriculum Vitae. You can apply your fresh knowledge from school and are mentored by your employer.

But they definitely demand big involvement and effort.

How to get an internship?

The first step in answering the question “How do I find an internship?” is asking “What do I want to do?” Start looking at industries that you’re interested in and get a feel for what they’re looking for. Make a list of the companies or fields you might want to work in, and then start listing potential internships in each one. You should also look at which cities you might want to try out or that you’ve always wanted to visit. Very important is also to look a recommendation. Then you start to make your documents like cover letter und CV ready. Make them special and in connection to what you would like to do for the company. Contact and networking with friends and family can help you to find the right place and get advice and tips. And if you’ve already applied, you need to follow up else all of that work will have been for nothing. You might end up not getting the internship. And if you do get an interview – be prepared.

Limitation of the Internship

An internship is an unpaid or less paid position. In our society, there is often accusation ‘Why work for free after studying so hard?’ People are true in some sense, but HOW can you just focus on the economical aspect when you would like to find job satisfaction and fulfillment both in your future job life? Before being able to get paid for work, sometimes employees need you to gain experience in a particular field. Through an internship, you can get experience to explore your ideas and develop confidence in your abilities. And you find out in time if you should look for another job somewhere else.

In conclusion, working as an internship can be the first place where you can start your career. For sure they don’t give you money but that might give you much more of experience and self-esteem than sitting at home and sending out job application after application. Sometimes internship may turn into a career and sometimes not. It is for you to find out what’s suitable for you. At first, it may appear as if there are only two possibilities. On the one hand, there are typical academic careers and on the other hand, there is a huge job market for non-academic jobs. People on the job market often find themselves considering a wide range of different job options. And it may turn out to be more appealing than at first. The main point is to know what you want. Do you want money? Is that what a good job means to you? Or do you want prestige? Or would you settle for little pay as long as you have the passion for what you do? The clearer you are about your goal, the easier it becomes to plot a route.

No job is small

Our best advice to job seekers looking outside academia is to believe that you have something valuable to offer. The one common thread that we all touched on was the importance of seeing oneself as an asset to others. Unfortunately, we often sense that seeking non-academic employment is equated with failure.  Evidently, job seekers look for non-academic jobs because they can’t find other work - this sort of attitude easily undermines one’s performance in the job interview. After all, who would want to hire a failure? Clearly, this problem requires more than a dose of positive self-esteem or a newfound belief in the dignity of all work.

Non-academic skills

More and more evidence reflects the need to allow students to develop as people and not just as students. It’s time to think beyond the emphasis on academics and give importance to teaching/learning other stuff for success and independent living. We have come to recognize this “stuff” as non-academic skills. It’s important for example to know how to navigate through technology to find a quick fix for something that may be needed. These so called 21st Century Skills are making you independent. Also working on your grit is needed. When the going gets tough, the tough get going is a difficult lesson. Often, it leaves us adults wanting to hide under the blankets! Having the courage and determination to resolve an obstacle or finish something that was once started is a key indication of one’s grit. You should allow yourself also to create Growth in your Mindset. When you practice anything over and over again, positive results are bound to come around. Taking up a Hobby with enough persistent effort can grow a talent from the ground up, and this is an invaluable life skill that can be applied to just about every challenge you may face. And having good Soft Skills like good manners and punctuality are always helpful in jobs.

So all in all, everybody is thinking hard about what would be a satisfactory job or career, and then have to be prepared to work hard to find employment that meets their own personal goals.
