[:en]”My Future Pro” workshop at Prabina Foundation Nepal[:]

Career Disha Nepal conducted 4 days workshop for 15 students in Prabina Foundation Nepal located at Anamnagar. The workshop comprised of My Future Pro which is a group-tool for educational and career coaching designed especially for youth to help them recognize their own interests, their strengths, suitable job sectors and leisure activities.

The workshop started with a brief interaction between our counselor, Mr.Hari Krishna Dahal and the students (from grade 6- 10). CDN Career Counselor, Mr.Dahal consulted the students regarding the type of personality one can have, different jobs he/she can pursue according to his/her personality and the ways to make job choices that can help them be satisfied in their career. The students interactively asked questions on the different career they wanted to pursue, to which our Counselor replied with detailed information on those jobs and the values and skills required for respective jobs/career. Accordingly, the first day of this workshop was dedicated in understanding the interests of each and every student present in the workshop.

On the 2nd and 3rd day, students were really excited and curious to know more about My Future Pro and participate in the workshop. Our counselor, Mr.Dahal started the workshop with the introduction of My Future Pro and various activities involved in this workshop. One by one, students were asked to do the activities through which they were able to identify jobs that would fit them best and that they would like to pursue along with their true interests and strengths. The whole workshop was conducted in an enjoyable and thoughtful manner, with jokes and interesting games in between, with the consideration to maintain the excitement and focus of the participants.

On the final day of My future Pro workshop, students were asked to interview each other about their interests, abilities and values. In addition to the discussion, students were also asked to analyze their own answers and data of My Future Pro that helped them acknowledge themselves and career of their interests.

Computer Engineering is defined as the discipline that embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of software and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment. Computer engineering has traditionally been viewed as a combination of both computer science (CS) and electrical engineering (EE). It focuses on both hardware and software aspects of computing, from designing micro-controllers, microprocessors and computers to developing software to run computers and applications.

It has two major specialties: hardware engineering and software engineering. Hardware engineering deals with research, development, design, and testing of various computer equipment whereas Software engineering deals with development, design and testing of software programs.

Depending upon the specialty, Computer Engineers generally  do the following tasks:

  • Developing, testing and evaluating the software that make our computers work.
  • Help in the development of new computer games and business applications, or even in the design of entirely new operating systems.
  •  Installing an operating system on a machine, looking at trouble tickets and works with end-users to fix the problem.
  • Understand and apply knowledge of computer science and electrical engineering.
  •  Develop and work with digital technology, in computer networking and computer systems.
  • Develop computer hardware and design and implement software applications
  • Use skill and knowledge in hardware and software design
  • Work in computer programming to make computing platforms and applications both effective and efficient.
  • Ensure smooth functioning and integration of computer hardware and software.
  • Keep updates about  latest innovations in technology
  • Optimize network capabilities and communications systems.
  • They also work in Robotics, Aeronautic design, wireless networks, sophisticated equipments etc.

Ideal Qualities to be Computer Engineer

Work activities, only mental: If you prefer your work to be mental in nature, without much physical activity. Then Computer Engineer job is suitable for you where you are mostly required to sit in one place and come up with ideas or handle information.

Information Processing, only detailed: If you prefer to focus on a specific aspect of your work and to go deeper into the details then computer engineer career is best fits your personality.

Flexibility, very low: If you prefer to have a fixed work routine with little or no change every day. You only want to go to an office at a specific time each working day then Computer Engineering is kind of desk jobs you are looking for.

Value orientation, only idealistic: If you believe that your work must have meaning behind it, without any material importance.

Pursuit of Success, low: If you have, your personal life is important to you. You don’t want your social and family relationships to suffer from dedicating time to your work. Computer Engineering is that kind of job which will not interfere with your private life.

Motivation to Create, high: If you prefer to come up with your own ways of doing things then Computer Engineering is the career where you can invent new things on your own.

Sense of Duty, very high: If you often feel personally responsible for your work. You are careful when doing your work and you like to do your best then go for computer engineering.

Analysis orientated, very high: You like to spend a lot of time thinking before you make a decision. You believe that it is important to consider everything before acting. Then computer Engineer career is the one which required high level of analysis oriented quality.

TSLC in Computer Engineering covers courses including Information and Communication Technology, Web development as well as graphic design. [:en]CDN Conducted Newly Developed Workshop ‘Career Crash Course’ [:]

On the December 17th, 2016, Career Disha Nepal conducted prototype workshop ‘Career Crash Course’ successfully at VHS Bhaktapur.

This newly developed CDN service (workshop) is mainly focused on recognized oneself, strength, values and interests as well as competency. The aim of this one day workshop ‘Career Crash Course’ was to test our new service, its functionality, reliability as well as to collect the feedback from participants to generate new ideas quickly for improvement in the proper way.

There were 12 people participating in the workshop including 3 supervisors. The Workshop was started through dividing groups, each group had three people. In the whole workshop, there were 4 sections that were Jobs and labor market sectors, Interest & value, Competence Assessments and Next Steps. The first part of the workshop analyzed the participants’ vastness towards labor market and minimum requirements for each job. In the second section, participants presented group poster presentation in one of the job sectors. In the presentation, each group presents different job sectors, positives and negatives side, possible employee, and its role in the development of the country. Similarly, in the Competence Assessments, there were 11 stations to analyze students’ competency.  This section analyzes individuals’ methodological, technical, social and personal competence.  In the last session, participants filled up their own values on the worksheet and interviewed another participant as well as recommended the jobs according to their competence assessments.

At the end of the workshop, participants filled up the feedback form as well as discussed in open feedback session. Participants expressed that through workshops they broadened their information about jobs available in Nepal, and were clear about their suitable profession according to own

competence skills and values. Similarly, for the further improvements participants suggested splitting into different parts and conducting them in different days with more supervisors would be more effective and convenient. Likewise, if there were some inspirational career related videos and story would be more enthralling, recommended by one of the participants. So, all your feedback and recommendation would be backing for CDN to develop this workshop more youth centered.

This program was hosted and directed by CDN technical director Inge Patsch and CDN Career Counselor Mr. Hari Krishna Dahal as well as CDN Chief Administrative Officer Suresh Kasula. The program started at 9.00am and ended at 6.00 pm. Overall workshop was filled with enthusiasm and participatory approach.
