Dang, a new emerging district for legal careers

Dang, is in the far-western Nepal, with population of over 540,000. It has population demography of over 48% of youths between the ages of 16-30. Due to this age the number of youths looking for career has increased exponentially compared to the last few years.

Through this article, we want to illustrate where a youth can get involved in legal sector in far-western region. The article too deals with the careers within the legal sector that are more lucrative and have a higher demand. This information was gathered from a local lawyer from Public Advocacy Law Firm established in Ghorahi, Dang with an experience of more than 5 years of practice.

Against popular belief, only around 30% of the lawyers work full time, most of them are government employees. The self employment rate is astonishingly around 80%.

“My Future Pro Workshop” for 9 Graded Students in FWHC

 

We conducted My Abilities sector of “My Future Pro” workshop for 9 young students studying in 9 grades residing in the Forum for the Welfare Himalayan Children (FWHC) on 6th October 2018.

My Future Pro, the self-reflective exercise book contains 3 major parts, My Interest, My Ability, and My Values. The exercises are designed to evaluate own self through individual past and present background, hobbies, priority, and perception of each and every event of their life. And help them to find a suitable career option accordingly.

Through “My Abilities” sector, students get detailed information about their abilities as well as their friends by doing different activities. My Abilities section help them to recognize their strengths, and how strengths are interrelated with individual interests and values.

During the session, students were curious to know their unknown and neglected abilities.  And our career counselor facilitates them to eliminate their queries by giving the relevant example. During the workshop, students presented the presentation, interviewed each other and share their opinion with their friends in the context of individual abilities linking with the different profession.

In the review session, students told that from now onward they are crystal clear about their future career and better able to decide career considering individual abilities. The program was run by CDN Career Counselor Hari Krishna Dahal.

If you facing the problem, not finding the job in your field then following steps will help you to increase your possibilities to be selected in the job you applied for. Follow these steps right away.

  1. Review your resume

Have you ever checked your resume before you attached in the email to employers? The first suggestion is, do check your resume. Why? There might be hundreds of applicants for the respective job, generally, employers are looking for something interesting and creative. If you send the same type of resume that may not interest the employers. Do some effort to make your resume speak out loud. Tailored your resume according to each job you are applied.  Add and edit your all your qualification, experience, and skills you have gained yet.

  1. Check your cover letter

The cover letter has higher chances to win employers heart. Good cover letter increases your chances to be selected for the next step, interview. Then what is a good cover letter? A good cover letter contains the reason why and how you are the best fit for the respective job. Don’t write a long story in out of the content. Write to the point to show employers that you are the right candidate for the respective job.

  1. Search Matching Job

Have you ever sent job applications randomly and counting the number of jobs you are applied for? If you do so! You might wrong! Make sure the jobs you are applying are the best fit for your education, skills, and personality. If you apply for best fitting jobs then your chances to get a job can be increased. But, if you do not know what kind of jobs matches your skills and personality then take the psychometric assessment nearby which will help you to find the list of available jobs that match you best.

  1. Well Preparation for the Interview

Before going to face interview be prepare why you like to work in the respective company, why the company activities are important to bring positive changes in the society. Make employers satisfied but don’t exaggerate. Researching thoroughly all about the company and the responsibilities of the respective position is the first things you should do if you call for the interview. And giving the logical answer for each question the employer asked is most essential. Be comfortable. If you have not any experienced in the respective field, share your opinion. Your convincing answer in the interview means, increasing your chances to be hired in the respective position.

  1. Networking

Take the advantages of people you know around. Let your friends and family know that you are looking for the jobs. Talk to the person you meet in the different event and program. And follow up them until you do not find any jobs. Some of them take you seriously and help you to find the jobs form their network.

The internship is not only helping you to add experience in your CV, it also helps you to horizon your knowledge in the respective field and helps you to develop a social network to find the job. Most of the youth tend to think that completing a college degree and working for free is the waste of the time but keep in mind that most of the employers prefer to hire the candidates who have the experience in the respective field.

I have a college degree but I cannot find any job in my field?

“I have a college degree but I am not able to find any job in my field of Study.” – Frequent statement with series of questionnaire follows our Social media page every week. This is a common problem most of our youths facing today. While education in Nepal greatly improved, number of educated person in the graph has rocketed in short period of time although the education system in Nepal is one of the youngest in the world.

In recent years number of students appearing higher education has simultaneously increased. As we are working closely with youths, our findings and our work indeed is essential to set career goals of youths of Nepal. Problem finding the jobs after completion of college degree in relation to developed world is higher. There might be different external causes in the context of developed world but in the case of Nepal we figured out few points to be noted.

  • The term “Career Counseling” is referred to “Abroad studies” rather than setting a individual’s career goal
  • No relevant information available on educational possibilities
  • Most of the youths do not have clear idea choosing specific subject in their higher education
  • There is no clear information on connection of your education and profession
  • Competence level of Nepali students seems low in relation to international students
  • Most of the educational institution prefer to give theoretical knowledge (no- practical knowledge)
  • Vocational education possibilities is available in Nepal but has never got any higher chance to be a interesting part of educational system

We here conclude the number of problems can be dealt with proper career counseling tools and information on possibilities. We have figured out in several of our studies most of the students are missing the information on the educational possibilities and its relation of studies in the job market.

Here in this article we do want to discuss on the very specific group of students who have completed their college degree and are not able to find the job according to their study fields. There might be several reasons to keep them unemployed. The aim of the career orientation was to help yet another group of students to know about the future career prospects in Nepal along with the things that determine the right career, and the importance of picking interest based career and education for a successful career.

He also expanded by informing students about the general mistakes one makes while deciding the education and career. And, also provides the structure to avoid such mistakes.
