[:en]’CDN’s Information Sharing Meeting with NVQS[:]

Representatives from Career Disha Nepal and the capacity development specialist, Ms Prativa Joshi from National Vocational Qualification System (NVQS) had a small information sharing meeting on the Friday 27th October 2017.

NVQS is working towards creating a more streamlined education system where the gap between vocational training and formal academics is bridged. The talk was mainly focused on the development and the structure of the current educational system as well as its future. Through the meet, we found out that NVQS working with National Skill Testing Board (NSTB) and Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) are planning a draft of that system which is to be completed by 2019, according to Ms Prativa Joshi.

The idea is to create an identical field where youth who have completed the vocational training and formal academics have similar career opportunities. This, according to Ms Joshi, could start off by providing certification to youths/students that have successfully completed their vocational training. One of the concepts that we should all be excited is that NVQS too plans to expand the vocation training to an equivalent rate to a PhD graduate. The details, however, are still under construction.

What do I know, and what more do I need to know about Nepal’s labour market

The information available at the moment in the ministry of information and statistic bureau is not enough to make any concrete hypothesis, conclusion as well as produce any convincing statements about the future trend of the labour market in Nepal. However, there are few facts that have been staple news for the last half century, which need not be repeated. Facts like - the percentage of Nepali directly and indirectly involved in agriculture- 75% or so, the rising movement of Nepali workforce to Middle East for jobs- currently around 1500 people per day.

Though Nepal is still in the first stage of economic growth, primary sector (farming and agriculture) is still dominant in the nation. Normally, for sustaining growth the nation usually moves from primary to manufacturing and then to service sector. Nepal skipped the manufacturing sector and is moving rapidly into service. Information about the areas where the newest members of our work-force might want to work next is still under construction. The last 10 years, exponential growth was seen in infrastructure, esp. in hydro electricity, at the same time according to few experts, if managed, Nepal can be one of the most attractive places for travellers. Sadly, the movement to the Middle East has become a sensation mostly due to lack of information about the availability of domestic resources.

A huge number of youth are choosing urban areas to rural areas for both for opportunity (education, jobs etc.) as well as for permanent residence. It can be thus prematurely concluded that the increasing number of youth do not wish to recognize what is needed for the growth of their villages (villages make up over 70% of Nepal), and thus choose their education which are saturated and usually over supplied.

Educational System of Nepal

The main area this section deals with is the structure of the educational system and its reach to the different area of Nepal.

Educational System

Nepal’s educational and learning sector can be roughly broken into five sections: Training, Diploma, TECS, Technical SLC and Academics. Though majority of students and teachers choose academics over the other 4 sections, they are well developed and have specific as well as a significant role in creating employment.

Training:

  • Depending upon the level, this area can be accessed by people with basic literacy.
  • Some short-term courses have a duration of less than 150 hours (3 hours a day for a month)
  • Training can help you develop quick and specific skill, which are usually highly sought after.
  • The same area can have a different level of training. (Electrician course can have training starting from 390 hours and can go up to 3 years)

TECS

  • Technical Secondary Education usually has chosen by those who have a certain leaning already set up. Like those who want to study Agriculture or Engineer or Health etc.
  • TECS has five specialized course, each of which has the duration of 4-5 years.
  • TECS help grow and specialize in the area of your interest from 8th
  • Similar examination as SLC is taken for TECS students named TECS, with the two extra technical subjects that were the specialization.

Post- TSLC

  • Post-TSLC training is accessible to everybody who appeared for SLC.
  • Courses are offered by the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) and have the duration of 18 months each.
  • Post-TSLC takes 1 year 3 months to 2 years 5 months to complete depending on respective subjects. Like those who want to study specific subjects area, engineer, health, agriculture, hospitality etc.

Diploma

  • This education type is after the completion of SLC, has more choices than that of TSLC and is more of a professional education than academic.
  • Targeted towards the students that have a certain career in their mind.
  • One can join Bachelors after the completion of Diploma or even get in the labour market.

Did you get guidance about suitable education and career plan according to your interests, personalities and abilities to find your dream job? Due to a lack of information and limited socio-economic circumstances, many young Nepali people don’t get this chance. Career Disha Nepal (CDN) acts to solve the existing problem of youth in Nepal by guiding them to select suitable education and career according to their interests, personalities and abilities. CDN aims to establish a motivated, enthusiastic and thus a successful youth in Nepal helping them to plan their career consciously.  With the huge engagement of our local team and the help of early supporters, we have already created a good basic for guidance. Yet the more we do, the more need we see and the more ideas we have. For creating the impact we hope for we need to still grow in terms of the area we cover as well as services we provide. To reach the tipping point, we need your help. Therefore, we have decided to go online with a Crowdfunding Project, start from 8th of October which will end on the 5th of November. WE will update you when our campaign is online.

What is Crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a way of raising money for an idea, project, enterprise or charity on an online platform. This is happening with the contribution and help of friends, families, customers as well as individuals who are interested in the idea. Crowdfunding platforms, social media and personal network are the main sources for approaching the people and gain their attention. For this purpose, we chose the online platform: Indiegogo. We are hoping to reach as many people as possible who would like to support to make bright future of the Nepali youth!

Why are we doing this Crowdfunding?

We are self-sustainable in terms of our basic monthly operating cost but we are not yet able to finance the development of new features, comprehensive data collection, research and development as well as developing partnerships in remote areas from the surplus we make.

We want to provide our services in 75 districts and reach at least 20% of the graduating students all over Nepal, by the end of 2019.  Moreover, we want to make CDN services easily accessible to the youth who live in and outside of the Kathmandu Valley with an affordable price for everyone. Therefore, YOUR help is needed. With your help, we would like to:

  • Improve the features our software and website provides
  • Collect even more fine-graded data about the job market.
  • Spend time on exploring partnerships in more remote areas of Nepal

[:en]+2 Didn’t Work Out for You? 4 Things to Do Next[:]

This year, 2074, the National Examination Board announced that 1,33,329 students passed the 12th grade while more than 50 percent students got an ‘F’. For many that mean students cannot continue their Bachelor level the same year. Along with that, both groups of students are asking what to do next?... Failing in an exam doesn’t mean that your dreams are broken or it is the end of the world for you.There are a lot of opportunities which you may not have realized yet. This article is for those students who were not able to pass their 12 grade. We would like you to be open to various options considering your situation.

If you are failed in the exams reappearing is the major things you would do.  But, before filling the form for re-examination think about YOU and your personality, interest, aptitude. Answer some self-reflective questions, what type of students are you?  What are the reasons for not doing so well this time?... What do you like to be in future? How might reappearing be important to accomplish your dream? … If you don’t have answers to the above questions, go to your teacher, whom you can interact openly and inquire.

But in other cases, If you think you are not the academically sounds students and you are certain that you will repeat the similar result, you have other options too.

  1. Vocational Training

Vocational training is the short (160 hours) and long-term (390 hours or over a year) both type of professional training for the particular field. The benefit of Vocational training is that it provides relatively easy access to the job market. Generally, one can work in Agriculture, Art and Creativity, Engineering, Hospitality, Building and Construction's jobs sectors with vocational training. What you have to do is to find out your personality, are you interested to work in above sectors, are you practical person, do you want to have a job as soon as possible in those fields. If you think so, the first option might be the best fit you.

2. Internship

CDN 3rd advice to students who can’t pass 12-grade exams is an internship. The internship is the less paid or unpaid work to have an experience in particular fields that you are interested in. This is a practical way of learning to be more confident in the respective field. Through the internship, you can get experience to explore your ideas and develop confidence in your abilities. This also helps you to enlarge your personal network to get a job in near future. If you are still confused about which career to choose, then an internship is one of the options to know in details. On the other hand, if you have taken certain training in the particular field, want to expand your knowledge in the respective area to start own business then doing an internship is perfect for you.

3. Job

4th option for those students whose financial condition is quite low, earning money is the highest concern than looking for a job is best for you. If you like to spend certain hours for work, you like to spend left time with family and friends then search the job in the market. At present, there are various higher paying jobs that only required minimum education, under +2., you have to work under the supervisor in the junior position but you get the money on hands. 4. Technical Diploma

If you think that your chosen subject in +2 was wrong, you preferred subjects are available in technical Diploma than go for it. A Technical Diploma course is equivalent to +2 levels. Generally, technical diploma programs take between 2 and 3 years to complete. One can begin a technical diploma after completing SEE (Secondary Education Examination). Technical Diplomas are useful for those interested in very specific subjects, like Civil Engineering, Nursing, or Architecture.

We believe that no jobs are small, your best performance in the area you have chosen is important to be a success. Follow above advice and realize what advice fits you better. Even if you are still confused then CDN is always here for you.

[:en]MOOCs  – A GOOD WAY TO UPGRADE ONE`S CAREER[:]

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an Internet based course with limitless attendance. Meaning, anybody who has Internet access and the will to spend time on learning respective subjects, especially in IT and Economics MOOCs offer a lot,- can join a MOOC, most of the time even for free. Imagining how a MOOC looks like is easy because you can simply think of an ordinary university which has no physically present students and all its exams, lectures and exercises are solely done through the Internet. So far even highly recognised companies, as well as universities like Google and Harvard, have created MOOCs, mutually with MOOC-institutions (e.g. edX, Coursera etc.) because they all believe in MOOCs` original aim which is providing people of lower socio-economic statuses as well as of remote living areas with higher education. However, recent trends have revealed that rather citizens from developed countries (mostly OECD-states) exploit MOOCs in order to boost their own professional career.

But how are MOOCs actually helpful for professional success?

A recent research conducted by Harvard Business Review (hbr.org) shows that 72% of its survey’s respondents reported career benefits due to MOOCs. This includes promotions, job offers and general recognition of improved work. The reason for this kind of professional success is the fact that MOOCs are the only existing alternative to common universities or learning centres which are flexible and have no restrictions on time, guaranteeing calm, convenient and self-paced studying. You are the one who decides when you learn, how much you learn and most importantly what you learn. Especially, busy and already employed workers specifically demand this unique way of receiving higher education. They simply want to utilise the short time spent on taking the bus to work for learning a new skill precisely helping with their individual job or one specific issue, they actually have to solve right now. In this sense picking up samples of a suitable MOOC is not only more helpful than attending a whole semester at university, it makes you even a better worker in a comparatively short time which is why MOOCs are one of them if not, the most efficient way to get knowledge and thus a career benefit.

Even for people who now not hold a work place MOOCs could help their careers. Being unemployed is frustrating as one gets the feeling of permanently losing valuable time. This, however, can be compensated by MOOCs which are in this situation the best time spender to keep oneself competitive on the labour market. Use your spare time to the refreshing knowledge you already possess and by chance add even a new skill to your tool box. Getting a certificate for a newly achieved competence makes definitely sense for unemployed people who can now legitimately write down their recently gained skill in their CV. In this situation, MOOCs will enhance your competitiveness and might even bring the advantage which helps you, in the end, to actually get a job. Although big MOOC-institutions specifically consider employers` demand while building an online course, MOOCs are also helpful for students who already want to learn upcoming subjects or topics in order to be more successful in their universities.

To conclude, MOOCs are truly bringing advantages, improving one`s career in many regards. The best part about it is that one can choose for its own to which extent one wants to utilise MOOCs, making it nearly for everyone helpful and stress less. It still must be mentioned that the first and foremost requirement for a MOOC is creating oneself time and to be motivated enough to start and continue with a MOOC without relying on people from the outside pressuring YOU to actually do it.

[:en]‘My Future Pro’ in FWHC[:]

On the 6th of September 2017, Career Disha Nepal conducted ‘My Future Pro’ workshop to young students of grade 9 and 10, residing at Forum for the Welfare Himalayan Children organization, Bungmati. This workshop session was one out of 24 sessions of full year career centric activities program which started from 17th of June 2017.

The exercise included in this workshop called ‘My Future Pro-I’ was designed to help students to identify their three major Interests, to know the steps to develop it, to realize the maximum hours a week they actually spend on each interest, to know ways to build their interest into a career. We have assessed that the students have a set of characteristics that lead their lives and they are most comfortable with. If a similar trend, as well as characteristics, can be found in their future career option the youth would be a) prepared to tackle problems themselves in their own special manner and b) there would be less friction while doing day-to-day tasks.

At the end of this workshop, students are clear about their own interest, the things they really like to do in their leisure time. Students felt pretty amazed by knowing their interest can be turned into a career. Students told us that “this self-reflective exercise realized our personal background profile, the past, present and its link to the future career expectation.”

To make career counselling accessible to Nepali youth all over Nepal, CDN is paving its path to work together with partners of various backgrounds. We have started our partnership with a community learning centre as well as an NGO which is aiming for gathering Nepali volunteers from all over Nepal; VHS and Himalayan Climate Initiative (HCI).

VHS Bhaktapur is a community learning centre, working with innovative approaches and openness for various sectors to create a new understanding of informal education in Nepal. VHS Bhaktapur is incorporating career counselling by providing the opportunity to all their members, as well as the youth. Career Disha Nepal’s target has always been to reach the most number of youth who are in dire need of career counseling and education-based guidance. The past year we have catered youth from within the valley, and had to reject youth that were outside our vicinity.
